Laboratory – Mineral and Coal Analysis

Short Description
The Mineral and Coal Analysis Laboratory is a laboratory used to serve educational activities such as practicum for undergraduate and graduate students, student research in completing thesis/thesis/dissertation as well as research and community service for academic staff, especially within the Metallurgical Engineering Study Program. The range of research facilities available at the Mineral and Coal Analysis Laboratory includes mineral and coal sample preparation, mineral composition analysis (metal element analysis), coal quality analysis, and acid mine drainage analysis. Equipment owned includes analytical balance, isotemp control oven, AFT furnace, pulverizer, calorific value bomb calorimeter, water purifier, digital pyrometer, and wet analysis equipment.

There is one course that conducts practicum in this laboratory each year, namely the Coal Processing and Utilization course which studies the characteristics, processing technology and utilization of coal such as the floating sediment test, proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and determination of HGI and Free Swelling Index values.
Meanwhile for research, this laboratory is used to conduct experiments regarding the characterization, optimization and processing technology and utilization of coal such as the following themes:

  • Effect of Adding K2O3 As a Catalyst in the Coal Gasification Process
  • Biodesulfurization of Organic Sulfur in Coal Using Multistage Bioprocess Method
  • Utilization of Coal Bottom Ash from Textile Company Waste as Biobriquette Fuel

In addition, this laboratory is also used for the preparation and analysis of coal for further research. Many research and community service activities have been carried out at the Mineral and Coal Analysis Laboratory, FTTM, ITB, including:

  • Effect of Adding K2O3 As a Catalyst in the Coal Gasification Process.
  • Biodesulfurization of Organic Sulfur in Coal Using Multistage Bioprocess Method.
  • The Effect of Mixing Grinding Balls on the Grinding Process at Ball Mill 2 PT Antam (Persero) Tbk UBPE Pongkor
  • Study of Effect of Addition of Precipitation Fe2O3 Catalyst on Coal Burning
  • Utilization of Coal Bottom Ash from Textile Company Waste as Biobriquette Fuel
  • Manufacturing of Nanozeolite and Its Utilization in Adsorption of Nickel and Chromium Ions from Electroplating Waste
  • Analysis of the Effect of Grinding Ball Size Blending on Mill Circuit Optimization at PT Antam UBPE Pongkor Process Plant
